| info Swedish born Emenius is a graduate of Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design, London, and today lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark. Visualizing the pulsating energies given out by people and objects, to capture their gravity and movements, the intangible and the temporary by harnessing the dominant sensation in the whirlwind of modern life. His studies of the world are often translated into choreographed spatial 'situations' with ambiguous and fragmented narratives that takes in death, suburbia, ascension, threat, popular culture and science fiction. Growing up in a suburb to Stockholm, trips to the mountains of northern Sweden, subway, swimming, Oscar Wilde, Coca-Cola, loneliness, stone roses, socialism, modernist utopias, tunnels, Picasso, blue velvet… Physical and mental experiences become visible, like dust collected on a shiny surface, by his paintings, drawings, objects, and moving image. Condensed into a frozen moment, again and again, the portraits are exposing an inner life, with references to nature, machines and the images constructed by the nervous system while observing and taking in our surroundings. It's the intensity of the experience that is singled out, the violent and brutal, not the discreet. The portraits often appear 'unfinished', maintaining an openness for interpretation, cautious not to describe the context and 'lead' the viewer, only hinting towards a reality, like faded pictures from a bygone world or an altered state - of acute awareness and heightened emotions. Making the portraits flicker and oscillate between being recognisable and unidentifiable, representable and abstract, splendid and terrifying, tragic and full of hope, confident and nervous, balanced and paranoid, safe and vulnerable, subjective and universal. Andreas Emenius has been presented in various galleries in Stockholm, Copenhagen, London, Berlin and Tokyo. In institutions such as Zeeuws Museum in Holland, Kiyomizu-Dera Temple in Kyoto, Japan, Wilhelm Wagendfeld Haus in Bremen, Germany, The Textile Museum, Washington, USA, New Benaki Museum, Athens. As well as during the Curitiba Biennale, Brazil, in 2010 and the Gwangju Design Biennale in South Korea in 2011. With designer Henrik Vibskov he elaborated an on-going art project called 'The Circular Series', which they begun to work on in 2009. Like in their earlier 'The Fringe Projects' collaboration, it works like an experiment, a conversation inside a formal framework, inspired by mankind's constant search for knowledge. Andreas Emenius staged and curated 'Movement', at H.C Andersen Castle, Copenhagen (2012). A total installation to be experienced during ten hours, with international artists in dialogue across the fields of painting, dance, performance and music. His latest solo exhibition is named 'Future Heads', (2012), at Jonas Kleerup Gallery, Stockholm (2012). Upcoming exhibitions include 'Circular Series, Section 7' (Vibskov&Emenius), Grand Humo, Belgium (2012), 'In case we don't die', Torrance Art Museum, Los Angeles, USA (2013) and 'The Situation', Schunck museum, Heleen, Holland (2013). He is an associative lecture at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, and regulary makes guest lectures at various institutions, such as Hochschule für Künste, Bremen. Andreas Emenius is represented by Gallery Jonas Kleerup, Stockholm. www.galleri-kleerup.se www.andreasemenius.com www.kunstdk.dk/kunstner/andreas_emenius www.vibskovemenius.com |
